Is YRF’s focuse hurting Rani Mukherjee?

Is Rani Mukerji’s decision to work mainly with Yash Raj Films hurting her?

That’s the question that was asked this morning by reports. Lovely Rani has done 10 films for them, two yet to be released. Her last five movies – Baabul, Ta Ra Rum Pum, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Saawariya and Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic – bombed. Rani does do movies outside of Yash Raj but they tend to be hatke movies – like Black and rather than mainstream ones.

The paper spoke to Kunal Kohli, who was once upon a time Rani’s favourite director (they worked together in Mujhse Dosti Karoge, Hum Tum and Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic), who said: “How can I answer why Rani wants to do only YRF films?”

The paper reported that Rani was unhappy with the way the company had promoted her movies and that she had been considering doing films outside the Yash Raj banner.

There were also reports that the shooting of Rani’s cricket film with newcomer YRF director Anurag Singh in which she stars with Shahid Kapur was stalled and she was ghost directing the film. But YRF denied this.

But the paper insisted that Rani was unhappy with Anurag’s work and had agreed to resume working only because of Aditya Chopra, to whom reports have linked her. Now YRF claims that the film will restart in January 2009.

The paper tried to speak to director Pradeep Sarkar, who had directed Rani in Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, and Ketan Mehta who had worked with the actress in Mangal Pandey: The Rising. Neither of them would comment. The paper claimed that other banners had altogether stopped offering the 30 year old actress films.
