Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi wins 3 awards !

7 01 2009

The awards season for Hindi films usually starts off in the New Year but a leading news channel Aaj Tak decided to voice their opinion loud and clear in the year end!

‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ was declared best film of the year 2008. The year end Movie Masala awards which bases its honours exclusively on the votes of the viewers of Aaj Tak, have also declared Anushka Sharma as the debutante of the year and acknowledged Aditya Chopra’s return behind the camera as the best directorial turn of the year.

Asked to comment on her win by Aaj Tak, Anushka was humility personified. “It is honour enough to work with Aditya Chopra, Shah Rukh Khan and the entire Yash Raj Films team. To win any kind of recognition on top of that is just icing on the cake. I hope that my subsequent work will live up to the expectations that viewers have of me after this kind of a stellar launch that Yash Raj Films has given me.”

Yash Raj must be pleased!!!

Shah Rukh Khan Rab ne bana di jodi

Yash Raj has become very wary of late. Their movies aren’t guaranteed to be a hit anymore and that’s why Aditya Chopra, known for keeping mum until a movies release, staged a special screening of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi for Yash Chopra, Karan Johar and the stars of the movie.

According to sources, everyone present was seriously impressed at the movie and Yash Chopra can breathe freely because he feels that this will bring Yash Raj back to the top again. A source reports,

“Well Adi was a relieved man once the show was over as RNBDJ has SUPERHIT written all over.

It is definately going to YRF’s savior just like last year’s SRK starrer Chak De India was! The movie is a complete family entertainerquite funny and has some really spectacular dance sequences.

The highlight number being the one where the King Khan is shown imitating old actors like Rajesh Khanna and Shammi Kapoor, etc. The film is a simple sweet love story shot mainly in India. Anushka has made a good debut and she is a good dancer.”

And for those of you who want to know what the storyline is, Shah Rukh Khan’s and Anushka Sharma’s characters are already married, although the marriage doesn’t really have much romance in it. Shah Rukh’s character really does love his wife though and when his wife wants to enter a dance competition (I’m assuming it’s a couples thing), he gets a makeover so he can be the guy of her dreams.

Sounds interesting…and different, Bollywood doesn’t really concentrate much on married couples, just on getting the two together.

Yash Chopra to direct again!

22 12 2008

Yash Chopra has been having sleepless nights after Yash Raj Film’s recent film, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi didn’t prove to be as big a hit as expected. He has finally decided to take control of things. Earlier this week, the long-expected meeting to get YRF back to its earlier glory took place between Aditya Chopra and his father, Yash Chopra.

This meeting was long overdue as industry insiders were wondering why Chopra Senior wasn’t taking the necessary steps to set things right at YRF after the banner suffered a loss of over Rs 100 crore in the last two years.

A well-placed source from YRF said, “Yashji was taken aback when the opening of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi wasn’t as encouraging as expected. The fact that the film’s collections improved after the first day and then dropped on Monday did not help much. Earlier this week, Yashji had a meeting with Aditya to discuss these matters. Yashji was particularly against the idea of hiring several technicians, directors and writers on a contract basis. Yashji was also quite concerned that the music of none of their recent films had done well. He felt that selling the music rights would have been a far better business decision.”

According to the source, Yashji called for the meeting as he was upset that as many as 10 Yash Raj films have not done good business in the last two years. The only films that did average business were Bachna Ae Haseeno and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi . Only two Yash Raj films, Dhoom 2 and Chak De! India proved to be successful. Their experiment with animation ( Roadside Romeo ) also failed miserably. Even the audio and video divisions have failed. One of the first things that Yashji wants to do is start directing his long pending film which will probably feature Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif.

“Many directors like Sanjay Gadhvi and Kunal Kohli have left YRF and several actors like Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan don’t want to associate themselves with the banner. Yashji wants to tackle these issues himself. He will be enforcing some rules after considering every aspect,” said the source.

The recent Yash Raj films that failed are Roadside Romeo, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, Tashan, Aaja Nachle, Laaga Chunri Mein Daag, Tara Rum Pum and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.

Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra’s movies too similar?

20 12 2008

Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra both making films on common theme ‘Terrorism’.

Director and producer Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar are very close friends. These days both of them are busy with their next flicks. On one hand KJo’s  is making ‘My Name is Khan’ while Aditya Chopra is making ‘New York’. Both the films are based on terrorism.

‘My Name is Khan’ is based on the bad condition of Muslims community after the September 11 terror attack. It will also focus on the creeping insecurity and feeling of being left out among Muslims in India. The movie stars Bollywood’s best onscreen pair Shahrukh Khan and Kajol in lead roles.

On the other hand ‘New York’ is a story about three friends discovering new world with an interesting star-cast starring John Abraham, Katrina Kaif and Neil Mukesh.  And one day things around them change completely and they realize that it’s their religion that kept them together. Irrfan Khan is also a part of it who plays a crime investigating officer.

Surprisingly, both the films are based on similar subject and are being shot at the same place Philadelphia. We can just say that both Aditya and Karan have started similar taste in film making along with good friendship.

Shahrukh Khan’s charm works abroad!

16 12 2008

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi may have had an average opening in India but the movie raked in a powerful estimated gross of $1.2 million in just three days at the North American box office.

The film, directed by Aditya Chopra , is the third such pairing between Shahrukh and Aditya after Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995) and Mohabbatein (2000), with the star proving once again that his box office appeal is still as strong as ever.

In ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’, Shahrukh plays a common man who comes up with a plot to win over his unloving young wife ( Anushka Sharma ). Well, he certainly appears to be winning over audiences abroad as experts believe that the film must have easily grossed over $3.5 million in three days outside India.

In North America, ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ is playing on 105 screens and took the 15th spot on the box office chart in its opening week, whilst the number one slot was held by Keanu Reeves with a remake of ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’, which grossed $31 million in over than 3500 theatres.

We’ll pick Shahrukh over Keanu anytime, anywhere!

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi brings cheers to Yash Camp!

Mumbai is still not in a cinema-going mood after the terror strikes, but movie buffs – and loyal Shah Rukh Khan fans to be precise – could not have given Yash Raj Films’ much-awaited movie Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi a miss.

So if not in droves, they came in sizeable numbers for the first day first show to give the movie a decent and honourable opening in the city.

The opening collections here ranged from 70 per cent to over 80 per cent – and more in other parts of the country. According to initial reports, the collections were cent per cent in many centres in north India, especially Punjab, thanks to rapid advance bookings.

Yash Raj Films (YRF), which has suffered monetary losses after successive failures of its recent ventures, could not have asked for more.

In one quick shot, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi redeemed its prestige. The credit for this, as many in the industry said, should go to the jodi (alliance) of Shah Rukh and the industry’s most private filmmaker, Aditya Chopra – the duo that have given one of the biggest hits in Dilwala Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.

The film is Shah Rukh’s first release of the year. Apart from this, it is the first Shah Rukh Khan-Aditya Chopra film in over eight years. They had last collaborated for Mohabbatein in 2000.

Set in Amritsar, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is the story of a mismatched couple played by Shah Rukh and newcomer Anushka Sharma and how the two of them find love in the backdrop of a dance competition.

The trade circles, which earlier were a little circumspect in their opinion about the movie’s probable box-office fate post 26/11, have now given the movie a thumbs up, saying it has brought a little cheer to Mumbai’s prevailing sombre mood.

In spite of not being a run-of-the-mill Bollywood blockbuster, Rab Ne… is attracting audiences all over the country because cinegoers have been missing the nation’s darling, Shah Rukh, the whole year and the breeziness he displays on the screen.

“Bollywood masala addicts may find Rab Ne… a low-key affair as it has no pungent sex and the picturesque locales YRF movies are known for, but what has marked it out is that it has identifiable characters and that makes it an intimate movie within the limited scope of the story,” said trade analyst V Verma.

YRF has two weeks to cash in on the enthusiasm the movie has generated among the audience before Aamir Khan-starrer Ghajini arrives. But by that time, Rab Ne.. would have consolidated its position at the box-office and be declared a superhit,” said I M Pannu, another trade analyst.

Reactions to Rab Ne…, however, was not as enthusiastic among some young audience members.

“I know ‘experimental’ may not be the right word to sum up the movie, but somehow I found the movie to be a tepid fare, lacking in the usual grandeur of a Bollywood movie,” said 21-year-old Dipesh Vyas, a college student.

But his friend Sheetal Jain said Shah Rukh made it all up. “Even the new girl, Anuksha Sharma, is good. In totality, I would say the movie is okay ” she added.
