Priyanka working on diverse films

28 03 2010

After spending 27 years on planet Earth out of which a good 7 years have been spent in the industry, Priyanka Chopra has already acted in 30 films, won a dozen odd awards and boasts of a Miss World crown no less. Still, despite all the accolades, recognition and acclaim coming her way, she chooses to be quite rooted. No starry airs, no signs of being distracted by any external forces and above all, no letting out of any excessive emotional energy, whether positive or negative.

Given the kind of acclaim that she has earning for herself year after year, has she pretty much made up her mind that she would continue to present herself as a package deal of class and mass? It pretty much appears to be the case as she is working in films like ANJAANA ANJAANI and DON sequel with as much aplomb as a FASHION and KAMINEY?

“In fact that has always been a conscious effort throughout my career”, agrees Priyanka who is clearly applying the ‘mantra’ of being versatile in each of her films, “I am fortunate enough to be enjoying films like Siddharth Anand’s ANJAANA ANJAANI with Ranbir Kapoor on one hand and Vishalji’s (Bhardwaj) next on another. Thankfully, it’s all working out quite well.”

For someone who has been around in the industry for so long now, an actor is expected to know very well in advance that whether a film of hers would get bouquets or brickbats.

“Actually not at all”, denies Priyanka, “I have done a lot of films in a short span of time and have just not stopped to think much. Due to this I tend to loose objectivity around my work that whether it would fetch me awards or not. Yes, it is indeed an amazing feeling when you get it but as an individual I have never been too sure or formed an opinion about my work. These are all subjective matters and I am completely calm when I do films. It is only at a later stage where I observe the kind of reactions that I end up getting.”

Hollywood can wait:Priyanka Chopra

26 03 2010

She might be one of the most ambitious actresses in Bollywood today, but Priyanka Chopra knows what her priorities are.

While most of our Bollywood actresses would never miss a chance to star in a Hollywood movie, Priyanka recently refused to star in Dawn of War. And it wasn’t because she didn’t like the script. The only reason Priyanka turned down the offer was because she chose to star in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Saat Khoon Maaf instead.

A source said, “The dates of Dawn of War and Saat Khoon Maaf were being worked out at the same time and Priyanka was asked to allot her dates in early April.

Left with no choice but to choose one of the two projects, Priyanka didn’t think twice before agreeing to star in Bhardwaj’s film. Priyanka was given a copy of the script of Dawn of War while she was shooting in the US for Siddarath Anand’s Anjaana Anjaani.”

After Priyanka refused the offer, director Tarsem Singh signed Freida Pinto to star opposite British actor Henry Cavill. Priyanka is currently shooting in Gulmarg and Srinagar for Saat Khoon Maaf and remained unavailable for comment.

Anjaana Anjaani stuck in U.S.!!

Ranbir & Priyanka arriving from U.S.

Producer Sajid Nadiadwala is spending sweaty sleepless nights. The entire unit of his film Anjaana Anjaani came back from the US. But the negative stock of his shot footage is still in the US, awaited a flight. This startling eventuality because there was no direct flight from San Francisco to Mumbai before Monday.

Anything can happen in transit. Agrees Sajid, “It is risky especially for an Indian film and that too for a producer with a name belonging to a particular community. But I had no choice but to wait till Monday for the shot footage to be sent from San Francisco to Mumbai .That’s when there’s a direct flight from San Francisco to Mumbai.”

According to Sajid, connecting flights are too risky. “If the footage had to change flights the risk of misplacement would be far greater. So I’d rather brave a delay and let my film come on a direct flight.”

In the meanwhile, as Monday creeps up on Sajid, he contemplates in his head the possibility, remote as it is, of even a part of the film being lost. “There’s nothing we can do if even part of the footage gets damaged or lost in transit.”

The precious cargo is insured. “But what good would the money do to me if the footage doesn’t reach Mumbai intact?”, reasons Sajid.

Anjaana Anjaani is at the moment kept in film lab in San Francisco. This is the first that the unit has returned without the film. Hopefully, all the labour that Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra have put into Anjaana Anjaani would reach Mumbai safe and sound.

Until then Sajid Nadiadwala and the entire unit are on tenterhooks.

My Word: Wish the best for Anjaani Anjaana and hope the footage makes it to India safely!!

I don’t work for Awards:Priyanka

22 03 2010

She has always picked up projects that have the right balance of class and mass but actress Priyanka Chopra says she never signs a film expecting to get an award.

Priyanka recently won her first National Award for her portrayal of a small town girl trying to make it big in the world of modelling in Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘Fashion’.

She went on to surprise critics with her power-packed performance as a feisty Maharashtrian girl in Vishal Bhardwaj’s ‘Kaminey’ besides doing masala films like ‘What’s Your Rashee?’ and ‘Pyaar Impossible’.

“It has always been a conscious effort throughout my career to be versatile. I am fortunate enough to be enjoying films like Siddharth Anand’s ‘Anjaana Anjaani’ with Ranbir Kapoor on one hand and Vishalji’s (Bhardwaj) next on another.

Thankfully, it’s all working out quite well,” says Priyanka.

Sajid bans Ranbir and Priyanka tweets!!

11 03 2010

Sajid Nadiadwala is the first  film producer to actually take the much-needed step against stars putting up information about under-production films on social networking websites.

This especially applies to one microblogging site, which according to one producer, is the “souten of all confidentiality clauses in filmcontracts.”

While other producers and directors have only been talking about it, Sajid Nadiadwala has belled the cat. He has contractually forbidden his cast and crew from going on any social networking site to write about his new film Anjaana Anjaani.

This critical decision had to be taken after Nadiadwala saw a constant inflow of pictures and information being put up on the said site. Priyanka Chopra and Ranbir Kapoor are both on the site. The former is especially active on the network.

Sajid had a closed-door meeting with his director and decided enough was enough.

Says Sajid, “I actually took the decision to forbid my cast and crew from putting any information on websites after an incident that happened with Sajid Khan, my director of Housefull. We were doing a photo-session with the film’s stars. We weren’t even finished and Sajid Khan had already put one of the pictures on the site. I was horrified. That’s when I decided it was time to make the confidentiality clause a legal issue in all my contracts.”

Sajid Nadiadwala laments the lack of privacy among stars today. “I remember when my father produced JP Dutta’s Ghulami, we’d stand outside Dharmendra’s van for hours waiting for him to emerge so we could see what he wore, how he styled his hair, what watch he had on, etc. Today the stars volunteer all this information on the social networks even before the director takes his first shot. I think all of us need to make confidentiality compulsory for every film.”

Sajid says the internet syndrome started to affect him during Kambakkht Ishq. “But then it wasn’t so bad because the fad hadn’t become an epidemic in our film industry. Kareena and Akshay Kumar were not on such sites,” observes Nadiadwala.

Needless to say, Priyanka Chopra’s ceaseless tweeting prompted Nadiadwala to take the decision to forbid his films from being discussed minute-by-minute on the internet.
