I’ll sue Saregama: Sajid Nadiadwala

2 05 2010
The legal dispute over the copyright for the Laawaaris song, Apni Toh Jaise Taise, has resulted in producer Sajid Nadiadwala suing music company Saregama, and not Prakash Mehra’s sons, Punit and Amit, for defamation.

“In all my years as a producer, I’ve never felt so humiliated. It is like I go into a shop and buy something, and then I’m accused of stealing it. Wasn’t it Saregama’s responsibility to make sure all legal and ethical bases were covered before they sold the song’s rights to me?” he asks.

According to sources, Nadiadwala paid Rs 15 lakhs to Saregama for the rights. Says Nadiadwala, “I can’t disclose the amount. But it’s almost five times the money required to record a new song. In any case, it’s easy to buy copyrights for songs from Saregama. In fact, we got Kaanta Lagaa from Saregama for Mujhse Shaadi Karogi and there was no problem,” adding, “My quibble is with Saregama for not going through a proper procedure. I’m a professional producer who knows how to read the fine print. I’m going to sue Saregama for defamation. It’s either that or a public apology.”

Farah’s not missing SRK!

17 03 2010

Farah Khan has a special appearance in Milap Zaveri’s Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai! in which she plays herself, and the  film has a sequence in which she is shown to be yearning for her friend Shah Rukh Khan’s company and says, “I miss you Shah Rukh.”

The scene was shot almost a year ago when Farah and Shah Rukh were pretty thick, but things have changed now.

And considering that, Milap, who is very close to Farah and her brother Sajid, sensed Farah’s discomfiture and decided to delete the line. It was ironic that the scene, initially meant to be comic, became such a raw nerve. “Farah is extremely special to me and her cameo lights up my film.

I wouldn’t want to do anything to embarrass her,” confirmed Milap, who has co-written Hey Babyy as well as Housefull which were directed by Sajid Khan.

Sajid bans Ranbir and Priyanka tweets!!

11 03 2010

Sajid Nadiadwala is the first  film producer to actually take the much-needed step against stars putting up information about under-production films on social networking websites.

This especially applies to one microblogging site, which according to one producer, is the “souten of all confidentiality clauses in filmcontracts.”

While other producers and directors have only been talking about it, Sajid Nadiadwala has belled the cat. He has contractually forbidden his cast and crew from going on any social networking site to write about his new film Anjaana Anjaani.

This critical decision had to be taken after Nadiadwala saw a constant inflow of pictures and information being put up on the said site. Priyanka Chopra and Ranbir Kapoor are both on the site. The former is especially active on the network.

Sajid had a closed-door meeting with his director and decided enough was enough.

Says Sajid, “I actually took the decision to forbid my cast and crew from putting any information on websites after an incident that happened with Sajid Khan, my director of Housefull. We were doing a photo-session with the film’s stars. We weren’t even finished and Sajid Khan had already put one of the pictures on the site. I was horrified. That’s when I decided it was time to make the confidentiality clause a legal issue in all my contracts.”

Sajid Nadiadwala laments the lack of privacy among stars today. “I remember when my father produced JP Dutta’s Ghulami, we’d stand outside Dharmendra’s van for hours waiting for him to emerge so we could see what he wore, how he styled his hair, what watch he had on, etc. Today the stars volunteer all this information on the social networks even before the director takes his first shot. I think all of us need to make confidentiality compulsory for every film.”

Sajid says the internet syndrome started to affect him during Kambakkht Ishq. “But then it wasn’t so bad because the fad hadn’t become an epidemic in our film industry. Kareena and Akshay Kumar were not on such sites,” observes Nadiadwala.

Needless to say, Priyanka Chopra’s ceaseless tweeting prompted Nadiadwala to take the decision to forbid his films from being discussed minute-by-minute on the internet.
